  • Have you ever tried to quit?

I’m trying to stop drinking caffeine..specifically pop. I’m trying to do one a day for now…but I still feel exhausted. The headaches I can deal with, but I can’t stand feeling this tired all the time..

Have you ever tried to quit caffeine? What helped you feel less tired? I really need some help!! :/

  • I think drinking diet pepsi so much probably adds to my anxiety, but I don’t notice real energy changes when I don’t.  I just crave the bubbles.  What is it that has motivated you to make this change?

  • I haven’t completely quit drinking pop…but I have a can once a week, sometimes a bit often. On the other hand, I can’t stop drinking coffee. I need it to get through school and I get migraines without it.

  • I quit caffeine and found that meth takes the edge off nicely.  But srsly, cold turkey is best.  The chills, diarrhea  and vomiting will subside after a few days and then it’s clear sailing.

  • I quit soda a long time ago. lol

  • @DrummingMediocrity - Trying to be healthier. I’m also trying to stay away from processed foods. If I could also buy organic instead of regular produce, that would be better..but organic is so expensive.

@xdeelynnx - I looove coffee. Had some this morning :D

  • @skeptic42 -  I don’t get those kinds of side effects! lol! Just headaches and tiredness.

@UnconventionalButterfly - I try…I’ve tried so many times. The longest I’ve lasted is two weeks without it :/

  • @crazy2love - It is.  Coffee is incredibly good for you, so I’d recommend having it even with caffeine (though I never drink coffee, but that’s cuz I hate bitterness).  I don’t personally see a problem with caffeine unless you have an aversive reaction, but I would recommend giving up meat.  Yes it is ethical, but our bodies do not digest meat very well.  Plus saturated fat/cholesterol are major contributors to America’s health problems, and almost solely found in animal products.

  • Try the caffeine patch.

  • I have found that quitting something cold turkey never really works. I say ween down. Limit yourself. For a week only drink three glasses of soda, one with every meal. Then if you can get comfortable with it, limit yourself to two glasses. Then one a day. Then perhaps every other day in a week, until you get down to where you want. I have always struggled to stop drinking sodas, I just can’t do it. I’ve switched to diet and drink coffee to at least keep me away from soda. Ah, I have an addictive personality. -___-

  • Oh man, I at least drink 2-3 cups of coffee or tea daily… I can’t imagine how crappy I’d feel if I tried to quit. But I figure, I got clean from opiates and the needle, so I deserve to keep my caffiene… At least for awhile. The ‘anonymous’ meetings tend to get people addicted to caffiene. You’d be amazed how many people get addicted to it and the sugar once they lose their main drug. (Opiate addicts are famous for the amount of sugar they consume when they are getting clean.. kinda like the ‘do you want any coffee with your sugar’ saying…lol.) I would say your best bet is to just knock down your caffiene intake gradually, and not try to do it all at once. A huge change of the amount of caffiene your body takes in can cause…well, withdrawals pretty much, i.e. the loss of energy, headaches. So cutting it down, SLOWLY, would be the key for you.

  • One thing you can do is eat vegetarian meats and food.
You must have drunk lots of coffee, soda pop to have headaches.
Try fruit juices to pick yourself up.
Also you can can try something like Roma, which is a grain brand coffee, that looks like folgers crystals, taste like and is not coffee.
But it is not good drinking all that stuff the acid will one day give you ulcers. Bro. Doc

  • I get seizures from caffeine. That doesn’t mean I don’t drink it though. I find it so hard to not drink anything with caffeine in it. I mean I go to McDonalds and I can pretty much get water or a smoothie, it sucks. I just drink it every now and then.

  • I’m massively addicted to caffeine. I hate bitter coffee though, and so it’s pretty much diet coke all day long. Sure I’ve heard people tell me it’s not good for me, but I don’t smoke, and I don’t drink alcohol on a daily basis, I figure If anything, I’m only hurting myself, and honestly, the caffeine helps subdue the migraines that run in our family (yes migraine pills consist of aspirin, acetaminophin and Caffeine). I tried to quit a couple times, but I think the longest I did was one time for lent and I was cranky and miserable and had headaches and I thought, why am I going through all this? Noone is perfect. Noone. They are fooling themselves if they think they are. If they aren’t eating meat, or sugar, or caffeine, perhaps they smoke, or drink alcohol, or cuss, or watch porn or speed in traffic or something so I don’t think anyone should get on anothers case about what their vice is, especially if it is legal and not harmful to another being (and that you aren’t pregnant b/c some would say then that whatever you do affects the baby in which case it is harming another potentially).

Do as you wish, but if you still drink soda, I am still going to like you, and I think your other friends would too. You might get some kudos or pats on the back if you quit, and you might loose some weight if you drink the sugared type now, and you quit that without replacing it with something else with as many calories (even juices can be high calorie). But overall it has to be something you really want to do for you. Will quitting really give you more joy than the bubbles and caffeine do now? I chose not, so I remain addicted.

  • @DrummingMediocrity - I can’t drink plain coffee..I always have to add sugar and hazelnut cream or have it flavored in some way. I won’t give up meat…but I only eat lean meats most of the time, like chicken..I love chicken. I haven’t bought any kind of red meat in years. I like fish, but I only eat it when I go out sometimes…I’ve never tried cooking it myself.

@amateurprose - There is such a thing?! Haha!

@None_May_Have_Her - I have an addictive personality with some things too. I’m not cold turkey, just drastically reducing my intake from 3 to 1, lol. I can do that just fine, it’s just the side effects of less caffeine in my system :/

@kaitlove__xx - Yeah, that’s true. I just wish I could completely cut it out and be done with it. I have to have sugar with my coffee to sweeten it up, for sure!

@Foodhog - I LOVE their frozen strawberry lemonade!! Soo tasty! As long as they don’t put too much strawberry in, otherwise it’s gross.

  • @Crystalinne - I honestly think my health is more important, and pop is really bad for you…not only on your system, but also for your teeth. I’m trying to break my addiction because I’d like to live a long, healthy life and not end up with something like diabetes or heart disease.

  • Yes! I did for a year or two. Back on one a day – diet coke. You can do it when something else becomes more important to you!

  • @crazy2love - people keep changing their mind about what is best for our health. for awhile they said eggs were bad, then they said eat more eggs. Same went for even carrots… remember Atkins? Yea, he said tons of fatty meats but no carrots. well people say caffeine is bad, but elsewhere I read if you drink it regularly and your body is used to it, it doesn’t have the adverse affects proported by others. Just like cracking knuckles, long said it harms you, but other doctors say its just releasing air pockets.  I guess we all pick and choose which readings to believe. There will be someone out there agreeing with just about anything you decide is what you want to do. I’m not trying to necessarily dissuade you, but I’m just saying I doubt quitting soda will all of a sudden make you a better or healthy person. You already are a good person. And as for health, unless you cut out all trans fat things, and salt, and all cakes, icecreams and other sugary things, and carrots, corn and peas (if you believe that camp that says they are bad for you since carbs turn into fat), then there will always be something bad.  FOr all we know we will be hit by a bus tomorrow, or the end of the world and though wanting to be healthy is good, I think moderation and exercize are the best and longest proven methods.  Just don’t suffer or berate yourself if you really try and cannot give up the caffeine.

Oh If you are worried about your teeth, just brush 3x a day like our parents taught us, or drink the non sugar sodas. Even juices have sugars that can harm your teeth. Brushing is the best thing for that, not avoiding the caffeine, especially if you use a good toothpaste (not suggesting you currently don’t)

  • I’m addicted to herbal life shakes.

  • ps you can still have a long life even if you drink soda. My great grandmother drank it sometimes and she lived to be 98. Both of my regular grandmothers drink it regularly (granted, not as much as me) and they are both in thier late 80′s now. As for it causing diabetes, well Im already 43 and though I drink soday constantly, my blood counts are great and I don’t have diabetes. Perhaps Im just blessed, but I do believe there is a lot more to it than that. I’ll say no more b/c Im sure this is not the poplular opinion. Most people will probably agree that quitting is best. Im just saying assess what you are really trying to do and why, get the facts not just heresay or comments from a blogsite, and go into it with your eyes open. Best of luck. Truly.

  • @Crystalinne - I’m just cutting out most processed foods, because it is bad for you. If you were to go completely fresh produce and lean meats and nothing else for an entire month and you ate one bad meal (such as any processed food or fast food), you’ll feel very sick. Your body detoxed from all that crap, and once it’s gone from your system and you eat it again, you’ll notice what you’re putting into your body and how bad it really is for you.

@Donkey_Guy_10 - Good for you! I hope I can last longer than a couple weeks this time!

@RulerofMasons - I love those!! I haven’t made one in forever. I still have all the stuff I need..I just haven’t done it…maybe I’ll have one for dinner.

  • @None_May_Have_Her - Thank you, that’s awesome. I’ve never heard of right nostril breathing! lol

  • just gradually cut back until it becomes normal.  we eat very little processed foods, but we do eat lean meats and chicken. i love coffee, so i mix with some decaf.  i drink it with splenda or sugar & skim milk. we eat lots of fresh produce!  only a few things organic.  the benefits of eating whole foods far outweighs the risk from most produce. just wash it good.  whatever you do, do it a little at a time. make one change at a time until it becomes a good habit.–karen

  • I haven’t completely given up caffeine (as I still drink soda from time to time and coffee), but I have gone down the road of trying to quit. I thought the headaches were the worst. I wish you luck and the best, cause I know it’s a hard thing to do! Go you! I got to a point where I seriously just cut back on soda and now it doesn’t bother me. It took a while, but I’m glad I made that switch!

  • HI! I am always trying to quit pop. I”ve succeeded for long periods of time, but eventually I have always fallen off the wagon. I have been trying the one pop a day thing too, but your right, about half way through I am exhausted, although I find that if I drink my water I can keep going longer. I am going to try the Crystal Light with caffeine I think. For me it isn’t that as much as it is the sugar, so this time I’m going to try to get rid of them one at a time. Good luck to you!

  • I could never quit caffeine, I need it for medical reasons.

But I did recently quit drinking soda. After being hardcore addicted to it – one to three cans a day- for the past 12 years. And going cold turkey off that was actually harder for me than when I went cold turkey off narcotic painkillers.

I was miserable for almost a month. No energy, but couldn’t sleep, nauseous, migraines etc. But I slowly cut down and then switched to Swiss Miss caffeinated hot cocoa, then cut down on that too.

  • Ah shit. I am trying to quit pop, coffee and smoking. I’m a dead man walking if I don’t smarten up. Fuck it. Easier said than done.

  • Wean yourself off and drink a LOT of water. You’re dehydrated, so counteracting that will help a lot with the caffeine withdrawal.

  • I think maybe you have something else going on that isn’t necessarily caffeine related. How long do you have energy for?

  • I stopped drinking soda about 10 Years ago. I have like 1 a week. ^_^
