  • But not bitchy, right Ray?

I’ll never forget this episode of Everybody Loves Raymond…Debra was crabby about something, I don’t know what, and someone (I don’t remember who) convinced Ray that she was PMSing. So he brings home some Midol and gives it to her, saying, “Here, I thought you could use this honey.” They might have said a few other lines, but she says, “But not bitchy, right Ray?” The funny thing is, in some Midol and Pamprin it says it relieves “irritability.” Maybe I should have taken some…

Anyway, I’m PMSing today. Traffic was pissing me off to no end. I ended up speeding at 90mph several times to get around people when that wasn’t necessary…and the speed limit is 65. I listened to angry music on the way home and not much has improved my mood, especially since I got home and realized just how much cleaning I have to do. My room is a disaster. I have to put clothes away I don’t wear because I don’t have enough hangers. I need to clean my bookcase and box some of my books up, including textbooks from last semester. I also have to vacuum and entirely clean my bathroom. I have a couple of boxes I need to bring down to the storage room. And I don’t want to do any of it. The only thing I could do was start a load of laundry and put all the shit away I brought home from mom’s that’s been there all summer.

I wish I had my own place. I don’t have enough room for all my stuff in my bedroom. Definitely not enough room for all my books, which have to be numbering around 1,000 by now, if not more.

If you had 1,000+ books and had enough room to display them, how would you catalog them?

  • I’d catalog them in boxes with labels. Which is what I had to do until hubby put in wall shelving in our living room.

  • @firetyger - Right but, what I mean is, when you have the shelving space, how would you organize them? According to genre? Author’s last name? I’ve always struggled with this ever since my collection started getting large, lol!

  • @crazy2love - Generally, I go by genre and within the genre alphabetical by author.

  • I work in a public library…as a cataloger, believe it or not. Fiction works I would catalog by author’s last name. Nonfiction by Mr. Dewey Decimal.

  • Damn, I miss Everybody Loves Raymond! Such a funny show!!

My book collection isn’t as huge as yours, but I go by author’s last name. The only books kept separate are my antiques, and they’re organised by height/size for an interesting look haha.

  • Ummm I’m really not that picky. I would probably just put fiction in one spot and nonfiction in the other.

  • Sounds like a good workout! I only vacuum once every two months : )

  • Debra was such a nag. Never liked that show.

Anyways go with the librarian. She knows her stuff.

  • I catagorize my books by purpose. Resource and reference books together broken down into catagories of health and general sciences, art and history, nature and law. Books that have overlapping themes are set at the ends of one category to where they meet the next. I keep story books seperate and arranged by age appropriateness, with books that span generations on the upper shelves and the youngest reading levels nearer the floor. I keep Bible and other religious references in between history and fiction. Recepie and cook books are kept seperate and with craft and how to books. Miscelaneous books are kept at the end of my library.

I arrange the books in each section primarily alphabetically by content adjusted for by visual appearance and ordered either alphabetically or by date of publication depending which is more appropriate. It might seem complicated but as i often use my books it is easier to find the one I am looking for using a mental map of its location based on the purpose rather than the arbitrary assignment of the alphabet, as I often can’t remember the title anyhow.

Novels are arranged by author and/or series, ie all our son’s Goosebumps books are kept together and arranged in order of publication.

Each room has its own book display area, and the books are selected based on which are most likely to be read in that room. We also rotate books from one library to another throughout the house. Books that are not likely to be read or appreciated frequently are stored in boxes in the attic.

  • @Aloysius_son - Wow…that sounds amazing! I’ll have to keep this in mind!

  • Author’s last name like the library. *lol* But also, within genre. *lol* I just realize I miss all my books. Before we moved from Iowa, I probably had at least that many (1,000), but we had to downsize majorly when we moved here, so now, I’ve only got maybe 50. If that, even. *lol*

  • @Cestovatelka - What a coincidence, I categorize mine the same way :)

  • I don’t know how I’d categorize that many books…maybe like they do in the library??? BTW, I had to comment and say I love love love love love your theme now. YAY FIREFLY :D !!!
