I’m so goddamn hungry and I can’t afford groceries this week. It’s rent week. Should I pay for them using a credit card? The hunger is like a constant ache in my stomach that won’t go away. I’ve been eating once or twice a day for the last couple of weeks. Having to choose between bills and food is the worst decision in the fucking world. Am I supposed to let my credit score suffer even more just to eat? I mean, if I let my score get worse I won’t be able to get a decent loan on a house when I’m ready. Or a new car, whenever the fuck that will be. I won’t need a new car for a long time anyway. Mine has 64,000 miles and it’s an ’05. I’m so hungry I can’t sleep. My stomach pains are keeping me awake.
Fuck this life.
And I still have a ton of homework to do before Monday.

I am living that life, but I have an 89 camery. All my money goes to student loans. If I didnt work at chipotle, I honestly would never eat. Im so glad that they give me a free meal. Just make your meals count more. Buy things more on sale and things like potatoes and rice. Best of luck girl. These things arent forever
lots of ramen. x_x feel better. things should NOT be this hard for students!!
Eat or you won’t make it to a new car and house loan lol
I would say eat and pay for it with your credit card… we only live once. You shouldn’t let yourself suffer like that when there is something you can do about it… let the house and car loans wait for now …..
I ate stuff like ramen and shopped at the dollar store when a big lump sum presented itself. Also, cutting portions helped stretch the food. If you like adding boiled egg to meat salads (chicken, tuna, etc.), that helps. Sometimes, community groups or food banks offer good deals on bulk foods. Just don’t go dumpster diving.
I’ve been down this road before. Target and Walmart have reasonable prices on food so you might have to take a hit on your credit score just to hold you over. If you live in a state that has deposit law you cash in bottles and cans. When I was living in the dorms I had friends that would take all the empties from the recycling bins when they were short on cash.
@ShimmerBodyCream - I agree I don’t know what I would do if it wasn’t for hubby
@FoxFire12 - I know there are people that abuse the system, but I should point out that most people in poverty are there temporarily. Most people in these situations are there for a year or less, having fallen on hard times from losing a job, divorce, or sometimes the birth of a child. Only 12% of people who live in poverty are there for 5 years or longer.
Baby girl! Ramen and spam with maybe an egg should do the trick!! I remember being on a ramen diet… and to be honest, I loved it!
I have been in your shoes more than once. I would not recommend using the credit card. It will only create more problems for you. I ate a lot of rice and beans, as well as peany butter samwiches. Keeping you in thoughts and prayers…
Is there a food pantry near you?
Guess it’s time to tap that emergency fund.
I hope you just go out and get food. A credit rating is really overrated. You can get it back in shape and they don’t really turn people down unless they are super irresponsible.
i just spent $600 on a purse and 2 pairs of shorts yesterday. Aren’t I the luckiest person in the world to never have had to experience any of the things you’re going through?? Your post (and some others below) makes me cry. Despite everything I have, I feel just as empty as your stomach. EAT. You’ll pay it back with whatever you’re studying for.
One idea we considered for a time was buying groceries on credit, but paying the credit card off as you go. In other words, you could buy groceries now, then use the money you would spend on groceries next week or for the next pay period to pay off what you charged for groceries; rinse, repeat.
Just be careful not to spend more than you can afford to cover the next pay period. That way, you’re using your credit card and building good credit, but still using the money for its intended purpose. Also, you’re not paying a disgusting amount of interest because you’re paying off the balance every month.
Pasta, a few chicken breasts, and mixed frozen vegetables can go a long, long way, if you have some spices or can make sauces. Good luck!
Oh I feel your pain. When I was pregnant I had to choose between rent or food too frequently. Potatoes& rice were my friends. I went months without eating meat, it was horrible. I thank god I made a friend that worked at Subway, she would sneak cold cuts out for me. Try a foodbank. If I had known about them I would of used them back then.
Wishing you the best
do a google search for food banks in your area…around here we can go once a month to the local one and then they have an emergency pantry that you can also go to once a month to help make ends get closer to meeting…if you must use your credit card to buy groceries just be careful…don’t overdo it…easy to do when you are not physically handing over cash…i also find good bargains on the day old racks at many stores so that makes it easier to get more…>^,,^<
I’ve had that dilemma, and it’s tough. In my opinion, it’s okay to charge necessities on a credit card (food, gas, emergencies). Not everyone would agree with me, but I think having adequate food is essential to our health- physically, emotionally and mentally. When I do, I try to keep the charge minimally, like $25/week or something. Just enough to keep basic food in the fridge- rice, potatoes, chicken, frozen veggies, beans, etc. And when money is more comfortable, you can send in a little extra on your credit card payment.
I haven’t had to deal with this for awhile, but there was a period of time where I had no savings and I would go hungry for the last week in the month and it was literal hunger. Not even a can of corn in the pantry. I’m disabled so I live off just over 700 dollars a month and I can’t afford to drive, but if there were months I had extra it went in my savings for emergencies. Now I find myself hoarding food a lot if something is really on sale… people get really annoyed with me. “What do you need with 10 Jars of spaghetti sauce”. Because they’re a dollar each and I won’t need it for the next year.
Not having enough money to eat really taught me to grow up fast, I cut coupons, (and print coupons) I buy in bulk, I know which stores have what for cheap. If I go to walmart I get my cheese crackers because they’re 2.50 there, instead of my local grocery store, which is 3.19, but my local grocery store charges 40 cents less for milk. I don’t waste anything. I freeze everything. Heck last year I carved a pumpkin with my niece and froze the inners. I invested in a food processor from a yard sale for a dollar, which works amazingly, I used it to make muffins the everyday, which I also froze and heat up for breakfast. It’s about knowing what is good quality stuff and what is junk, what it good prices and what is crap prices.
I refuse food stamps or food pantries, but that’s just my pride, you by all means should take them. If you have less then 200 or 250 in your account they will give you emergency food stamps, which go through like right away, just google where your welfare office is, you can even fill the form out on the internet. You may have to go in for like a mini interview, I’m not sure…
Yeah, don’t hesitate to apply for food stamps. That’s what I pay taxes for! They’re insurance that people like you don’t need to worry about eating while society is depending on you to achieve at school so you can go back to work and contribute again.
That is aweful. I seriously hope that things will get better..
I love to read and appreciate your work.

Honestly, I’m not trying to sound like a bitch but …be an adult and figure out what you’re going to do, instead of wasting your energy, blogging about you’re sucky life. Its 2013, EVERYONE and their mother is having money problems.(Unless you are apart of the 1%) Like think about the countless number of people in America that are going through things worse then having to cut back eating to once or twice a day. There are children in this country that don’t eat for weeks and they live in the street. Look up the pedophile sex rings in Houston, tell me that you have it worse then a 9 year old boy who gets fucked for $5. Think about the old lady down the block that can’t afford her medication that, God forbid, she doesn’t take, she dies. I mean your worried about buying a house, who-the-fuck-knows when, that’s dumb cause you don’t even know where you’ll be ten minutes from now. The best thing about hitting rock bottom….the only way to go is up. So hopefully you take this as the intended pep talk to get a jump start on your new, positive thinking life.
