  • plz stop time stamping ur blogs! (time stamped over 3 hours later…OH NOs!!!)

I received this comment on my last post: “plz stop time stamping ur blogs!”

    Hmm. I’ll consider it.

    Welllll……

    Nope. Sorry.

First of all, the word is PLEASE, not PLZ. Also, the word is YOUR, not UR. Lastly, the first word of a sentence should always be capitalized. Now that this grammar nazi can breathe again….

I wonder if this person spends all of their time on xanga making this request, because tons of people time stamp their posts. Raise your hand if you time stamp!!

I’m all for time stamping, I don’t mind it in the least. In fact, it’s the only way I can read some posts because I have over 600 friends…so I miss a lot of posts. I actually appreciate time stamping, if I’m being honest with you.

So, no, I will not stop time stamping. If you don’t like it, well, that’s your problem.

  • i love how they are trying to tell you to do something, and they are being highly informal about it.

it makes me giggle when people sound uneducated as they are trying to tell others what to do.

  • well, there is such thing as doing it too often, but what kind of a request was THAT?  “please” doesn’t even have a “z.”  pffft.

  • time stamping gives the blog much more exposure and is a very positive feature.  it’s there for a reason.  I time stamp, and I am quite able to ignore others who constantly time stamp because I know what they are doing and why, and I deem it a positive thing.

If someone wrote something like that to me, I’d do what I do whenever anyone complains about anything or tells me what to do with my blog.  I tell them that if they don’t like it, then they should UNSUB/UNFRIEND me!  simple as that!

  • The only timestamps I don’t like are the ones I see every. single. hour. LITERALLY. More than once. Other than that, they’re useful. I miss a lot of posts, too. I don’t have as many friends as you LOL but I don’t catch all of them.

  • The only time stamper I hate is Dear Ricky & he’s not on my friends list anymore so I don’t mind it.
I time stamp because some of my stuff gets posted at really slow times or late at night AND PEOPLE NEED TO READ MY SHIT DAMMIT!
    >:D

  • exactly. what you said

  • @And_I_love - time stamping gives the blog much more exposure and is a very positive feature.

But it’s always at the cost of people who are humble enough to not abuse the feature.

Of course, cutting in line would get blogs added attention– but something can be said about its fairness.

  • LOL. I saw that one, it made me laugh.

  • They could defriend you that simply if it bothered them that badly lol

  • I tend to hate time stamping when it’s overdone. Like Dear Ricky who will time stamp the shit out of one blog for days.

I usually just time stamp my blog once every couple of hours for one day then be done.

  • As you know I do it once to twice every entry depending on my mood

  • Me neither – not that I do it much as most people do.  Still….  Now if only some people could learn some grammar.  I know more 2nd language English speakers that can use good English grammar than I know 1st language English speakers that can.  It’s embarrassing!  What an indictment on the products of our public schools and their teachers!

  • I wonder if this person spends all of their time on xanga making this request, because tons of people time stamp their posts. Raise your hand if you time stamp!!

You’re so right. When you have enough hands raised, you have to be right– and all criticism physically melts away.

I’m all for time stamping, I don’t mind it in the least. In fact, it’s the only way I can read some posts because I have over 600 friends…

That’s your damn fault for having so many friends. Time-stamping won’t help you read more entries– it just reshuffles them.

Those who abuse the feature as an artifical bost floats the top, those who post fairly are drowned.

so I miss a lot of posts. I actually appreciate time stamping, if I’m being honest with you.

Oh, then it sounds like you enjoy the entries of those who happen to whore themselves Xanga-style. They should be on your friends list to begin with.

You know, friends list– like where you actually keep your “friends” as opposed to mere “subscriptions.” This neat distinction helps sort for the blogs you partilcuarily like fromt hose you’re merely meh about.

So, no, I will not stop time stamping. If you don’t like it, well, that’s your problem.

Of course, and messaging and commenting on places like this is an expression of our opinions. Now, you can ignore the criticism or you can address them reasonbly.

No, wait, pull out a Swastika and make some jokes.

  • @HappyLemming - Hey, it’s totally fair because no one is stopping you from doing it!  If you want to stop yourself that’s not our problem.  Your analogy of cutting in line is ridiculous.  there is no line!

  • I had a few people tell me this too. It’s MY blog and if YOU don’t like it, well delete me then. ^.^ I’ll do whatever the hell I please.

Not to mention, if the grammar was that terrible, I’d probably freak out!

  • I agree there are times I do my blog late at night after I get all my other stuff done then I time stamp it when I get up so I really don’t see the problem…some people just have to find a reason to complain…Oh well so goes life

  • Well, to be fair, if time-stamping didn’t exist – there would be no need for anyone to do it because everyone else wouldn’t be doing it!  But… yeah… asking people to stop?  Not going to happen.  LOL

  • Yeah, I’d have to jump on the “it’s not a big deal’ bandwagon.  I can’t stand people that timestamp the same tired old post I didn’t want to read two months ago, three months ago, four months ago and all the gagillion times you’ve timestamped since then.  But a couple of times per post to spread it over different time zones?  Why wouldn’t you?

  • @HappyLemming - tell it to the judge, lol.

  • @And_I_love - Hey, it’s totally fair because no one is stopping you from doing it!

Well, it has become the norm– occasionally time-stampign to help boost popularity. But there’s still a clear distinction between those who do it exccessively (*ahem* Rick) from those who do it as a regular practice for most entries, and those who do it sparingly.

Your analogy of cutting in line is ridiculous.  there is no line!

Yes there is. The line is to the top of our univesal inbox.

In this line, no one entry is inherently more deserving than the other. The actual merits towards determining who settles towards the top of the inbox is on date of publication: The more recently the entry is written, the higher it is on the inbox.

In this line, instead of first come first serve, it’s last come top inbox.

By faking the publication date of an entry, time-stamping is just like cutting that line.

  • @And_I_love - The problem is, there is no judge. Xanga is a community of equals.

Here, we check unfair behavior and bad behavior amongst ourselves through discourse and through discussion. Criticism of this form is offered in that vein.

  • @HappyLemming - duh!  I was being very facetious.  You might want to pick up a new cause because this is one you’ve already lost in fact.

Your thoughts are irrelevant as they go to the fact of the matter, people will do it as long as it can be done.

  • @And_I_love - Sure, but we can still discuss it on principle. You can address them or ignore them, it’s your life.

  • I used to hate timestamping. Because I had like 3 friends that would timestamp their post more than 10 times a day. But now that I have more friends, I appreciate timestamping. I also find it useful to do when I post something early in the morning or late at night.

  • @smoking_snakes - I also find it useful to do when I post something early in the morning or late at night.

See this is exactly what time-stamping is for: Publish it to a future time, as during the afternoon.

What is unfair is to publish it then, republish it in the afternoon, and then republish it again in the evening to catch the next bunch of traffic.

  • @HappyLemming - Yeah, and that’s what some of my former timestamping-happy friends would do. I only ever timestamp a post once. If it doesn’t get a lot of views, oh well.

  • If I got that comment, I would immediately time stamp the post just to piss em off.

  • Seriously?!? Uuuugh I never even notice your time stamps. I love reading your posts and if I can catch it while I’m busy then that’s great.

  • Your (and not you’re ) blog, thereby your choice

  • Your so right! I timestamp to get my blog exposure and those people need to shut up or defriend!

  • Time stamping annoys me when it’s over done. I haven’t noticed you doing that. But it’s only a passing annoyance not something that gets under my skin. I don’t time stamp but I would if I found a reason to.

  • I I’ve been here since 2005 and I didn’t know what timestamping was until late 2008.

  • @bethb031409 - Your so right! I timestamp to get my blog exposure and those people need to shut up or defriend!

What about actual entries for blog exposure?

As an entry ages and sinks in the universal inbox, instead of “timestamping,” write a new entry!

By timestamping, you are cheating the people who take the time to produce actual entries that are rightfully placed on the top of inboxes by their actual date of publication.

When you cheat, you deserve the accompanying flak.

  • @HappyLemming - Some people including myself have over 100 people, I can’t read every single blog, and if a entry is posted at a slow time, there is no reason not to re time stamp it so someone else can read it. I timestamp and I do write actual entries. I definitely wouldn’t go so far as to call it cheating. Thats going overboard cheating is when someone steals someone elses entry and passes them off as their own-timestamping isn’t that.

  • um. ok. i have a question…silly..um…what is timestamping?

  • @beebizzle - If you go to “edit” in the post, you can choose to “update to current time,” and every time you do that, your post goes to the top of your friend’s and sub’s universal inbox. Basically, it creates a situation where people can abuse it and time stamp however often they want. Some people do this every 10 minutes it seems, and it pisses some people off. If it’s not abused, say if you do it every couple/few hours, it lets more of your friends see your post. It’s a delicate balance to some, because it annoys some people. Me, I don’t mind either way. If I’ve already read the post, I don’t even bother looking at it.

  • I like time stamping because I update a few times throughout the day. Sometimes I really want people to read it! It’s a lot better than sending a mass message every hour saying “OMG GUYZ I UPDATED AGAIN FOR THE 50th TIME TODAY”

  • @crazy2love - oooooooh. interesting! i didn’t even know that. thank you. when you say your sub’s universal inbox does that mean all of your subscribers get a message that you posted a blog?

  • @beebizzle - Yep. When you’re in your private page, you can see all the updates in the “all items” tab, or you can choose just “friends” or “subs.” It’s not a message, it just shows up at the top under those tabs.

  • Plz stp bloggin bout mi grammaarrrr….

haha. I seriously hate people who write like that too :P

  • @crazy2love - oh ok. lol. thanks for explaining all this to me!!! i’ma go and timestamp some blogz nows. kthnxbai. lol. jk. but that is useful.

  • Timestamiping makes it easier so you won’t mis awesome posts!  XD

  • When will people learn.

  • i think its funny how u call urself a grammar nazi but u write “I wonder if this person spends all of their time on xanga…” when “this person” clearly refers to a singular noun but you use the plural possessive pronoun “their”.

  • (and separate two independent clauses with a comma. just sayin)

  • @poorgreenscreen - I was refraining from using he/she, which would have needlessly let everyone know the gender of the individual.

  • Admittedly, I don’t mind when people timestamp. I try to read as much as I can, and this way, I can avoid missing out on things.

Timestamp to your heart’s content! It’s your blog…no one should tell you what you should or shouldn’t do.

    Cheers!

    Taylor

  • @bethb031409 - Some people including myself have over 100 people, I can’t read every single blog

Yeah, me neither. But people timestamping doesn’t help you read more blogs, they just make it that their entries are more likely read, and this comes at the expense of someone who honestly posted their entries.

…and if a entry is posted at a slow time, there is no reason not to re time stamp it so someone else can read it.

Timestamping is for just this: Posting to a future date or time.

The abuse of timestamping is to post an entry once, timestamp it for the effect of resposting, and them timestamping it yet again to cut to the top of someone’s universal inbox.

If you want more traffic, then write another entry. Let the popularity of entries be dictated by its own merit, not how repeatedly a Xangan lies about its date of publication. If the entry is truely deserving, then it would be reccomended.

I timestamp and I do write actual entries. I definitely wouldn’t go so far as to call it cheating.

It’s cheating in the sense of stepping on someone else who also wrote actual entries but without the dishonesty of timestamping.

  • I try not to timestamp too much myself, I know how people are irritated over that. So I won’t timestamp a post over more than one day. But no one really had the right to say that, especially in that manner. Man, and where is the grammar/spelling? xD

ryc: It is never lame to want to be open to another. *hugs*

  • I’m a habitual time-stamper.  I love it.  I try to read everyone, but I do miss a few unfortunately.  Time-stamping helps me catch them.

  • I adore you for being a grammar nazi. As the poorly punctuated billboards say:

    The Few.
    The Proud.

    The Grammar Nazis

  • I think that person missed the great time-stamping war of 2008. The time-stampers won.

  • What’s the big deal about time stamping? Don’t listen to them!

  • GO GIRL! ;) xanga wont put that as a feature if it’s not useful though…

  • You can address them or ignore them, it’s your life.  chinese girl

  • How can you consider yourself a “grammar nazi” when you do not use proper antecedent agreement?

  • People who complain about time stamping need to get a life and more friends.

  • Right on. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go and time stamp some posts.
