  • Minnahhsooodahh

Yes, I am going there. I’m going to poke a little fun at my own accent. My sister makes fun of me all the time because of how I talk. I don’t always sound like the people on Fargo, but I have my moments, especially when I say “Minnesota.”

I don’t say “ya you betcha” or “dontcha know.” My grandma does, though. The accent that everyone thinks about when they think about Minnesota (thanks in part to movies such as Fargo) is actually more Northern Minnesotan than where I’m from, which is surrounding the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul, for those of you who don’t know).

Actually, the truth is, I love my state. I’m proud of us. We have our assholes, but we are generally known as “Minnesota nice.” I honestly don’t think I could ever live anywhere else. Well, maybe, but that remains to be seen. Here are some of the awesome things about the state I live in.

Something that has to do with the upcoming winter season: the ice castle in St. Paul. Every once in awhile, the city funds the building of a huge ice castle downtown. They haven’t done it in a few years, probably due to lack of budget, but it’s really quite amazing and beautiful. It’s built to be ready for the winter carnival. They put different lights within the ice and it looks gorgeous at night. I’m not sure if building one is in the budget this year…I doubt it.

The next thing I love about my state is Mall of America, or MOA. Most people here say it like it’s a word: MO-ahh. The mall opened in 1992, and is currently looking at expanding. None of the expansion is currently in the works, they are just proposals at this point (I believe). They want to expand because they are now in rivalry with other malls to be the largest in the US. Here are some interesting facts: there are over 520 stores in the mall; there is 4.3 miles of total store front footage; over 350 events are held at the mall every year; over 170,000 legos have been lost in the play area in LEGO Land; MOA generates nearly $2 billion a year in revenue for the state. I personaly love this mall, and I wish I could go there more often and had more money to spend there!

Valleyfair. I didn’t get to go this year, and I love this amusement park. It opened in 1976, and has continued its expansion to this very day. Approximately every other year, a new major ride is added. For the really hot days, you can chill in Soak City (I hate that new name…it used to just be called the waterpark!), which is included in admission. There’s a new feature in the waterpark: for some sort of amount of money, you can rent a tent that has a TV hooked up to satellite and other anemities! The park covers over 90 acres!! You can definitely get in your excercise if you walk around a few times! I would recommend going on a weekday in the summer, because on the weekends you have to wait way too long to get on a ride.

The season that just passed is my favorite in Minnesota: fall colors!!

My favorite place to visit is Up North. By the way, if someone says they’re going Up North for the weekend, you know that means pretty much anything north of the Twin Cities. If you go north on interstate 35 on a Friday, you’re asking for a bit of traffic trouble. The same when you go south on a Sunday. A lot of people have cabins in various areas in the northern part of the state. My favorite place is Duluth up to Grand Marais. It’s beautiful. The next series of photos were taken by Yours Truly :D

Of course, it’s the birthplace of the Mississippi River.

And last, but not least, it’s the home of the Minnesota Vikings!!

  • I loved reading this post! I spent about half of my growing up years in Minnesota and it will always be my home state in my heart. The statistic about the amount of legos lost made me laugh. I love Lego Land! And Excalibur is where it’s at when you go to Valleyfair–it always had the shortest lines. Aww, I love Minnesota so much, I wish I was there now!

  • I would love to visit Minnesota!! It looks so purdy!

  • @TheRiverIsEverywhere - Where are you now? Are you ever coming back?

@thegirlwiththecamera - It definitely is, you should visit!!

  • @crazy2love - I’m in Ohio now. My family moved here when I was 16 and I stayed here for college. I have always hoped to move back someday. I lived near the Twin Cities too. It’s such an awesome place to live. And even though I was born and raised a Steelers fan and always will be one, the Vikings will always hold a little place in my heart (although I still can’t get over Brett Favre being the QB, it just seems so weird to me).

  • You’re description of the accent reminded me of the mom from an old cartoon called “bobby’s world”. Wow, I hope I’m not the only person who remembers that show. I don’t think I’ve ever met in person someone with a Minnesota accent nor have I been anywhere near there. You painted quite a nice picture though.

  • -Whimpers- I wanna goooooooooooooo. Someone quick! Pack me in their bags and take me off to “Minnahhsooodahh” as she would put it.

Kinda makes me want to hear you talk now haha.

  • @TheRiverIsEverywhere - Aww, that sucks, moving away like that =[ Maybe you'll find a job here someday =]

@DessertHer - Really? I do remember Bobby’s World, lol. It had what’s his face from Let’s Make A Deal…I can’t remember his name, haha

  • @XxTransJayBoyxX - Hahaha! Pack a bag! lol. Everyone thinks my accent is interesting, but I think it’s so normal! I love other accents though, especially southern ones and foreign accents.

  • @crazy2love - What would be the point in that?! They could just shove me in theirs! I’m small enough. XD Okay wait, nevermind. I’ll pack my own bag. I’m not flexible haha. I’ve heard different accents but I like hearing them. =]

  • Brett!!!!!!!!!

My dad was born and raised in Perham, MN. He didn’t have any real “accent”.

My husband and I are moving to WI soon and I am looking forward to visiting his birthplace… plus I have tons of family out there that I haven’t met, and a nephew I haven’t seen in a really long time (he has his own kids now!).

I really enjoyed this post… LOVE the pics! Thanks!

  • @XxTransJayBoyxX - lmao!

@Vignettery - I know. Most people from the area don’t really have an “accent,” as far as I can tell. It’s just a normal accent, ha. Thanks, I enjoyed finding the pics! Good luck with the move…I just moved myself :/

  • seems nice, Id definately like to visit – but like you, Ive got a little pride, and boy – does texas have some assholes… but most of the people I know are wonderful. =) kind of like your “Minnesota Nice”

  • @crazy2love - Haha. Quick! Call me so I can hear it! XD Jk. You don’t have my number anyways… or do you. I mean.. you so totally were my stalker. =]

  • @XxTransJayBoyxX - lmao! That was your mom  Nope, no phone number for you =]

    @TheRiverIsEverywhere - I know right! =]

  • @wolvenchic - Aww. I like southern accents!!! That sucks about the assholes…but you should definitely visit sometime!

  • @crazy2love - Damn. I tried. I guess I’m not that sexy. Haha. Jk. One of these days I’ll figure it out. I got powers ya know.

  • lol post a video of you talking! I wanna hear the accent

  • @XxTransJayBoyxX - Ha what? I don’t have anyone’s number form xanga!

    @striemmy - lolz, maybe someday!!

  • Hmmm you and I have a different definition of Minnesota Nice.

I have so many former students that work at Valley Fair.  They always beg me to come but I won’t because the one time I went there as a child there was a tornado in the area and I had my shoes in a little cubby hole for some ride and in the panic someone took my shoes.  I cried and cried.  Forget the tornado, I lost my camouflage shoes.

The people of New Ulm spoke like the do in Fargo.  It was very strange.  I loved going to the bars there.  I would strike up conversations and soon I was speaking like them.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - Ha, I don’t think you can define “Minnesota Nice” by someone accidently grabbing your shoes in severe weather! I suppose that would be pretty traumatic for a child…I’m sorry you went through that.

  • No that shoe incident didn’t have anything to do with my definition of Minnesota Nice.  It was when I was a minister in a town on the edge of the suburbs.  People would be nice to you to your face and then once you left they started talking bad about you.  I actually had Minnesotans tell me that was the true definition of Minnesota Nice.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - I can totally see that happening, it happens all the time. Unfortunate it is. I try my hardest not to do it, but SOME people just need to be talked about. I wouldn’t talk about you behind your back, by the way.

  • Very cool! What’s your favorite part about going to the lakes?

  • Maaaan I was there like two years ago.. Minneapolis. In December, no less! I couldn’t find the Mall of America ANd I so wanted to check it out. Hahaha I like accents myself. They are beautiful to me.

  • @AnamcharaConcepts - The view. I’m not really the outdoorsy, water-loving type. Well, I do love hiking along the waterfalls! It’s great exercise.

@QueenOfOreos - It can be tough to get there. It’s best to have the passenger read the directions and help look at the signs. The inner-city can be a bitch to navigate….you really have to look for the road signs. It’s too bad you couldn’t get there! You should plan another trip

  • Yeaaah, but we didn’t have a car then. And suposedly we were just around the corner from it where our hotel was situated. Yeah riiight. LOL, and it was freezing cold…snow had just arrived so we said forget it. I am totally thinking of doing that…I really have to see that mall.

  • i always wanted to go to mall of american i mena its only like a 8 hr drive but ahhhh i wanna go!

  • @QueenOfOreos - Next time just go in the summer…no snow involved, lolz!

@thoughmomma - Then go, lol! Just grab a hotel room for a night or something.

  • @crazy2love - wish it was that easy lol No car money or a baby sitter (sammi cant travel far she gets reallly car sick)

  • @thoughmomma - Aww =[ Maybe someday!

  • You are in Fargo…as in Fargo, North Dakota??

  • never been to minnesota, even though i lived in wisconsin for a couple years..

    favre sucks, go bears

  • @Eternalimplosion - No, I was referring to the movie, Fargo. I live north of the cities.

@Paul_Partisan - You suck! Ha jk…what are you talking about man? My Vikings rule this year!

  • Crystal, do you think Jesse Ventura is one of Minnesota’s natural wonders?  Or am I opening up a whole other can of worms there…I do think he has a very impressive bald…and had enough sense not to run for President which maybe says something about the man…

I believe I did mention that I drove from Fargo to Duluth and stayed at a motel in Duluth one summer and I thought that the scenery was beautiful.  Many many lakes!

    Randy (NYC)

  • Ya, you betcha.

That last picture is low, lol.

Makes me a little homesick, but I just spent the weekend in Minneapolis. The music scene is probably one of the things I love most about the cities. My favorite place is the Duluth to Grand Marais + the Gun Flint Trail, too.

  • i love reading about other cities, while this southern girl isn’t too fond of the snow and cold, i must say those fall pictures were breathtaking. my sig o’ is from michigan, and that “dontcha know” sounds familiar. :)

  • I just don’t like Minnesotans who come to South Dakota. Because they donnnnnnnnnnnnnnt knoooooooooooooooooooooow how to drive. I’ve almost gotten ran off the road by a couple of them. Even Cassie one of my friends that lives there she says for some reasons they suck at driving here. lol :P

  • i believe i’ll be reading your blogs differently, from now on… with your not-quite-Fargo accent as my reading voice.  haha.

  • @forwhomthebelsentolls - Eh I was too young for the Ventura era. There was a lot of people I know who thought it was pretty stupid.

@MooncatBlue - I love that last picture, lol! I love Duluth.

@greentwiggy - My grandma says that ALL the time!

@TheBigShowAtUD - Haha, really? Well, I suppose (sort of) knowing how someone sounds could change things.

@MarnieAyn - There’s a lot of people who can’t drive, from all over the place. Wisconsin-ites are worse, lol.

  • @crazy2love - I don’t know why but it is always the Minnasotans here. Of course I’m not saying all of you suck at driving. Just the one I see all the time here. I never thought driving was that difficult. But if some lady is going the wrong way on a 4 lane highway I can honestly say she sucks at driving. (And is trying to kill me!!) lol

  • Not meaning to change the subject of course, but…

Some lady called me on the telephone and tried to verbally abuse me on the telephone while I was on here reading your comment to my comment and all the nice stuff about Minnesota scenery etc.  There are a bunch of people out there who want to dance off with me and get belligerent on the telephone and they think that there’s still revolution in the streets and the lawyer Jew man (me) is going to get necklaced.  There is civil unrest in downtown Newark, and the lumpenproletariat would like very desperately to obtain nuclear weapons and drop them on Tel Aviv but most likely they are gonna shit in their pants before they get there.  I find all of this quite hilarious.  Ah yes, I love the excitement of it all, the lust for violence at the core of every seemingly meaningless retarded telephone conversation on our office business line.

I also love reading Xanga because the best things in life are free.  I give and receive free advice here and there, and I have a distraction from the fact that I’m not making as much money as my younger brother allegedly does or did, perhaps.  Or the fact that I’d rather be man enough to work for Israeli intelligence as a torturer or something.  Torture and violence and a pickaxe buried to the hilt in my or somebody else’s fontanelles is all too often in my train of thought during any given weekday.

(Israel’s supposed to be a Jewish state and they officially aren’t supposed to have torturer as a military occupation specialty, there would be a lot more uproar over that in the Israeli newspapers than there would be in the regime-controlled press of neighboring enemy state Syria for example.)

  • I just moved to Minnesota :)

  • Love the ice castle pictures. I have never been to the mall of America.

  • Your post photos is superb.

  • Okay, I want an ice castle now.  =)

  • Very nice blog. I just moved from Ohio to Minnesota over a year ago. I love it here. Although, fall flew by WAY too fast this year =(  I’m located in Falcon Heights, smooshed right between  St.Paul and Minneapolis. when I first started talking to my boyfriend I noticed his slight MN accent. Now I don’t. There are a few people that still make me giggle though.

I don’t think there is a “Minnesota nice” though… It’s just like every other state I’ve lived in or been to. In fact, the drivers here are particularly assholes.

Anywhooo. Nice to see another ‘sotan on here.

  • Minnesota ftw!  :D

  • I just moved from Minneapolis in August. ugh. I miss it so much!
