Music: Then and Now
In a blog assignment from LostInTheLyrics, I have been given this to blog about:
“Compare your music tastes when you were 8 with your music tastes now. What changed, why did it change, and do you ever listen to the music your 8 year old self listened to just to go back for a little bit?”
I was born in 1986, and my parents had me young (my mom was 18 and my dad was 21). They were big into the 80′s music, and neither of them went through the grunge phase of the early 90′s, so I grew up listening to the 80′s. It was all about Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Blondie, Prince, Cheap Trick and Aerosmith.
If you’ve ever lived or visited Minnesota, you are aware of KS95 (or you should be). Their tag line is “80s, 90s, and today!” Every Friday night (this was years ago), Lisa Wright would do a segment called “Friday Night 80′s” and later you would “Meet me at the Maid!” The Mermaid is a bowling alley/dance club in the suburb of Mounds View.
At this time in my life, my dad would drive me every Friday night to go to my mom’s house, and on the way, we would listen to KS95. I was endlessly quizzed about the music. My dad grilled me on the artist and song title every time Lisa didn’t say it. It was our time together, and I loved every minute of it. My dad would often exclaim, “Good tune!” and crank up the volume.
My first favorite song actually occurred when I was 3 years old. It was The Look by Roxette. I learned the words quickly and sang along every time I heard it.
I didn’t start listening to any other music until the mid to late 90′s. I listened to Aqua, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, N’Sync, and Savage Garden.
I’m not entirely sure when it happened, but the flood gates opened and I started listening to EVERYTHING. Not even kidding!! I have a deep appreciation for all kinds of music, and there’s a lot of different kinds of music that I enjoy listening to. These include (but are not limited to): ambient, blues, bluegrass, classical, classic rock, country, electronica, darkwave, folk, gothic, industrial, jazz, musicals, opera, punk, rap, hip hop, reggae, all kinds of rock, pop, ska, soul, R&B, victorian, and techno.
I won’t blink an eye when I go from listening to Britney Spears to Porcelain and the Tramps to Miranda Lambert to Eminem. My mixed CDs have Bach and Beethovan with Emilie Autumn, Damian Rice and Insane Clown Posse all on one CD.
I’m not ashamed of any music I listen to, and I still listen to 80′s music. You can’t lump me in a group or classify me. I am unique because of all the music I enjoy. I love music from the 50′s, 60′s and 70′s.
The Look is still one of my most favorite songs to this day =]

Nice!!
The 2 best bands from Minnesota are Husker Du and The Replacements
Interesting…I dont think I remember any of the songs I listened to as a kid..or if I did at all. lol
I listen to all type of music to, and some people think that I’m weird because I don’t like just one kind of music. You already know I’m a fan of the Spice Girls, but I like Aqua and Insane Clown Posse too.
@ChainGangSoldier619 - I know, people tell me the same thing. I listen to every major radio station! It gets kind of hard keeping up with all the new songs and artists!!
@sweetlovinlife - Oh, I love music. Whenever I was depressed, I would listen to music and stare at the wall for hours :O
@Paul_Partisan -
I’m not that knowledgeable on local music like I should be!
@maxxi2031 - thanks =]
Beethoven and ICP…that is quite a mix. I think the radio station that I miss most since leaving Minneapolis is The Current although I could listen to it online.
@Paul_Partisan - Bob Dylan? Prince?
@godfatherofgreenbay - No way. They’re both cool and all. But Husker Du and the Replacements speak to me more.
