Fired Blogger
I just read an article on cnn.com about a blogger who was fired from her job because she revealed her idenity in her blog.
I don’t know much about these kinds of laws about firing people except for the obvious ones, but is it really legal to fire someone because of the content of their blog? I know potential employers look at your internet persona sometimes, but I didn’t think it was legal to fire someone for their blogging persona. When I read the article, it seemed like she didn’t even do that much wrong, except for criticizing her mayor.
I don’t know, it just seems wrong to me. I feel like what we can say as bloggers is shrinking into nothing, because it seems like the consequences for such minor offenses are too major.

the internet is crazay! That seems really unfair.
companies should be able to fire employees if they post stuff detrimental to the company.
this story seems silly.
Sounds like a lawsuit to me, wrongful termination of employment, but honestly, I read the title and thought you got fired. Silly me.
Blogging is freedom of speech, and they can’t censor you right to express your views. If she was blogging company secrets, like a chick at KFC that knew the 11 herbs and spices, and blogged it, yea, but just blogging? Hardly. She just earned a few million dollars.
But, I couldn’t find a precedent, so maybe this will be another attempt to censor the blogosphere. Not.
Remember this, “Your Identity is your Most important asset.”
@rhiannonator - I know. I’d be pissed if my employer fired me for my blog content!
@Paul_Partisan - I agree, it is silly. I feel bad for that lady!
@curious33 - lol, sorry about that! No, I didn’t get fired. I’m in no position to be fired…laid off maybe. But then I get unemployment…but yeah, I agree about posting company secrets, but as far as the article, she didn’t do that!
yeah, seems like there are probably more important things to worry about…
the only reason i can think of where this could be legal (then again i don’t have a whole heck of a lot of expertise) is if the blogger was giving away “insider info” or something of the sort in their blog. Then again, if you were doing something like that why would you reveal your ID?
@Peridot21 - I agree!
@someguy4398 - Yeah, that seems like the only legal way for them to fire her…but supposedly she didn’t. Maybe she did and it’s not mentioned in the article? I don’t know.
