  • downward spiral

Yesterday we got news that pay is getting cut 5% company wide. Senior managers are getting larger pay cuts.

They say the good news is that we still have jobs. They say we have jobs to come back to after our manufacturing shut downs.

Due to unexpected difficulties with our new operating software, we have to hire 6 people to support the added work. 600 applications were received for these 6 positions.

    Is this really getting better?

Honestly, up until now, the down economy hasn’t affected myself personally. I’ve seen staff reduced at my dad’s job, and he took a pay cut months ago. I haven’t worried about anything, really, because I’ve been so good at my job that I’m a valued employee. If people are laid off, I won’t be one of them. But what if the entire company goes down in flames? I don’t think it will happen, but I’m just saying. We’re seeing it with large corporations across the US, why not a much smaller company? There’s been Linens N Things and Circuit City, and more. What’s next? Is this really over? And how long after it starts getting better will we really start seeing improvements?

  • I understand your reasoning.

Although, it is less likely to happen to a smaller company, because bigger companies like Circuit City have expanded their work range and their franchise to the point that their infrastructure is unstable. Usually, smaller companies have a better time managing their infrastructure because they don’t experience the collosal organizational issues that big companies do. … This is why bigger companies are more likely to simply lay off a hoard of people rather than adjust pays individually.

The deal with the economys decline that a lot of people do not seem to realize is that many people thought that the Dow falling ‘just’ a few thousand points was the only bad thing that was going to happen. However, it always takes time before the effects of such things actually come into being.

  • Same things are happening in our company too.

  • hope your company is ok… and YOUR position in it, also.

but i have the same concerns, at times.  of course, dealing with my coworkers is hard enough.  i try to save the economy worries for when i get home.

  • @Pyronide - Actually, what you say is true…but the smaller company I work for is directly in connection with a much larger corporation…Caterpillar, in fact. So anything that happens at the Caterpillar branch that I work at, my smaller company is directly affected. When Cat had those layoffs, we had to have a layoff as well.

@TheBigShowAtUD - OMG I agree with dealing with co workers. Or…my boss. He’s an idiot. :/
