  • A Cleanse

I was cleaning my room today and I realized that I have too many things. I have over 150 movies. I have about 30 or so video games. I have hundreds of books. Upwards of 100 bottles of nailpolish. Candles. Arts and crafts I’ve never finished. Clothes I never wear. Clothes I CAN’T wear because they were supposed to be my inspiration to get thin. I have a 32″ 1080P TV in my room, a PS3, a PS2, a VCR that isn’t hooked up. Tons of shoes. I have a stereo I never listen to. About 30 bottles of perfume (none of them name brand… knock offs. I never pay a lot for my perfume). Purses. Just…. stuff.

I have so many boxes in the storage room that are mine. Many of them hold books, but many of them contain things. Sure, some of these things are things that have been given to me. Things that contain memories…. memories that I would forget if I didn’t have these things. I have like no room in my bedroom for things.

But… what do these things really matter? They are things. Material possessions don’t matter in the end. When you die and your soul does what it will… these things are left behind, useless. Well, not useless to others, perhaps, but they are useless to you.

Maybe I should clean some of this shit out. What do I need it for? I will never part with my books. But maybe I can get rid of some of these shoes and purses and clothes I don’t wear. Maybe I should purge my soul of these useless things.

  • I don’t know how useless they are. Try to find use first and then purge the ones you can’t… I liked this post it hits home, I am known to keep extra shit too.

  • I just recently dumped out boxes and boxes of old magazines.  I always through I should keep those and maybe look back at them, but honestly I figured when is that really going to happen?

  • I always find stuff like this when I clean. I actually still have a pair of jeans from 8th grade that didn’t fit when I ordered them but I kept them as a reason to get thin because they were really cute. They have been through multiple purges and still remain. They are probably too short and I think they are 6 sizes too small considering I got hips as I went through high school.

  • I try to purge my place of stuff pretty frequently. Give it to amvets or sell it on craigslist is what I do.

  • I’ve been getting rid of some of the stuff I don’t need. Old clothes and other things. But, I’d never get rid of my video games, or books.

  • I purge pretty often.  I keep my books and movies; I’ll never part with them.  I go through the magazines I’ve kept and clip the articles I like best, and keep them in a binder. I go through my closet every season and go through my clothes, and donate whatever I haven’t worn and have no intention of wearing in the last three to six months.  I guess I sort of side-step the perfumes, purses, and shoes.  I only have one purse, three pairs of shoes, and I never use perfume.

If the weather is still nice where you live, you could probably sell a lot of it in a yard sale.  You’ll get rid of it AND make some nice money, and whatever doesn’t sell can be donated to Goodwill or something.  No sense in packing it all back inside.

  • My favorite part of cleaning out my room is rediscovering stuff that I thought was thrown out years ago.  Neat people never make the kinds of exciting discoveries that I do.

  • Sounds like my room. I’m planning a massive pawn-off.

  • lmao! @Rob. True.

  • Yard Sale. The extra money is always nice.

  • your blog entries are so colorful so i will read more soonnice to meet you

  • I just throw things in the trash. But then I regret it moments later.

  • you are welcome to donate shoes and purses to me!

  • I would have to agree with some of the others….if the weather permits and you have the time, have a garage sale…you can make some decent money at them….

  • Thoreau said ” The true measure of a man’s worth is what he can live without.” or something like that.

    Books are special, though.

  • Last year I noticed I kept a myriad of things I was never going to look at or use again as I cleaned my reading room.  If I knew someone else wasn’t going to be able to use it, I threw it in the trash.  If it could be reused, I took it to Goodwill.

I’ll never part with my books, CDs or Photo albums though.  Those will be in my reading room until the day I “move” on.

  • I hear ya. When life circumstances drastically reduced the amount of “stuff” I had, it was…freeing. I’m sure it’s not like that for everyone, but I’m hoping to keep my life free of all kinds of clutter.
